Cinnamon Ginger Pear Smoothie

My inspirations for this drink were two large, very ripe, organic pears and a recent mail order delivery of organic ginger root powder. I decided to add some detoxifying cinnamon to the mix and some fig fiber for good measure. Enjoy this sweet and light meal!

Cinnamon Ginger Pear Smoothie

2 organic pears (cored and pealed)
1 frozen organic fig
2 T organic oatmeal ( I used One Degree)
1/2 cup organic hemp milk
1 1/2 t organic cinnamon
1 t organic ginger root powder (or 1" of fresh ginger root)
1 leaf of organic kale
3/4 cup ice

In the above order, in a Vitamix or high speed blender, mix ingredients from low speed to high, spending 20-30 seconds on high.

Coffee Date Smoothie

I was getting myself ready for a 12 mile canoe trip and was inspired to create this drink with a bit of a caffeine kicker.  For best results, cold brew the coffee in advance. Our recipe for cold brewed coffee is here.

Coffee Date Smoothie:
1 frozen organic banana (broken into pieces) - if using fresh add ice
4 organic dates (pitted)
1/2 cup cold brewed coffee concentrate
1 cup organic hemp milk
3 T organic quick oats (I used One Degree)
1/2 t organic cinnamon (I actually used pumpkin spice)

In a Vitamix or high speed mixer mix the ingredients in the above order from low speed to high. Spend 20-30 seconds on the highest speed. Enjoy!

Berry Beet Leaves Smoothie

Well, yesterday's post talked about all the great produce that we got with our spring shares in the local community-supported agriculture program. So, today I was inspired to work up a new smoothie recipe..

Don't throw away (or compost) the leaves from fresh beets! You'll love them as the greens in your next smoothie.

Berry Beet Leaves Smoothie:

1 organic banana
2 T organic oatmeal
11 ounces organic coconut water
5 ounces filtered water
1 t organic matcha powder
2/3 cup organic frozen mixed berries
4-5 organic beet leaves

In a Vitamix, or high speed mixer, combine the ingredients in the above order. Blend from low to high spending 30 seconds on the highest speed.

Enjoy these sweet greens!

Since I've been working working with turmeric in drinks lately, I wanted to try to create a sweet and spicy smoothie. This one wound up having so many layers of flavor, I had to label it the Supreme.

1" fresh organic turmeric root (grated)

Turmeric Elixir

Okay, so since creating the ginger one I am all about the elixirs. Finding fresh organic turmeric root in the market was the key to making this yellow-orange, super-spiced elixir. It should work well for headaches and other anti-inflammatory needs...

Turmeric Elixir:
4" fresh organic turmeric root (grated)
juice from 1/2 organic lemon
1 cup organic coconut water
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 pinch Himalayan Salt

Caution: Turmeric stains; believe my turmeric stained fingers, food processor and toothbrush.

In a high speed blender or Vitamix, combine the ingredients in in the above order. Mix from low speed to high, spending 20 seconds on the highest speed.

As with the ginger elixir, try a few ounces of this drink added to hot water for an eye opening tea.

Enjoy!

Chocolate Smoothie with Turmeric

First of all, I've got to say I am not a huge fan of turmeric.  The taste is not pleasing to me and it stains everything in sight!  With that said, I can no longer ignore this powerful spice any longer though. I need its anti-inflammatory magic.  So, I figured if I can't beat it, I might as well join it (and bring chocolate)!

This smoothie is delicious and one I can drink everyday.  So, turmeric is here to stay, with chocolate, that is.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup organic hemp milk
1/2 cup filtered water
1/2 cup ice
1 organic banana
1 scoop of organic nutritional powder, chocolate flavored
1/2-1 t organic turmeric

Method:

Place all ingredients in order listed above into a high speed blender.  Blend until smooth.

Cherry Fig Smoothie

For smoothies in the winter, I tend to buy up all the different types of frozen organic fruits that I run across in the market. Today, I wanted to try using a couple of fruits that are outside of my "normal" smoothie rotation, namely figs and cherries. The figs are frozen whole ones, which require a complete thawing before putting in the blender. I am so psyched to try this new combination of flavors again soon. Hope you enjoy it too!

Cherry Fig Smoothie

3 organic figs (if frozen, thaw completely)
1/2 cup organic dark cherries (frozen)
4 ounces organic hemp milk
4 ounces water
2 T organic oatmeal
1 t organic matcha powder
2/3 cup organic kale
1/3 cup organic spinach

In the above order, in a Vitamix or high speed blender, mix the ingredients from low speed to high. Mix for 30 seconds on the highest speed.

2 T organic quick oats
1/4 cup organic shredded coconut

Add the ingredients in the above order into a Vitamix or high speed blender. Blend from low to high, spending 30 seconds on the highest speed.

Vegan Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie

Valentines Day is coming!  You know what that means.  Chocolate!  I can not live without chocolate; sounds extreme I know, but it's the truth!

In an effort to reduce my eating of chocolate everyday, if not all day, I have turned to the smoothie!

Thank goodness for cacao nutritional powder; that's the stuff that kicks my smoothies into chocolate bliss.  The rich taste of cacao greatly satisfies my chocolate cravings.

Ok, back to Valentines Day!
Valentines Day morning slip into your kitchen, blend up this chocolatey cherry bliss of a smoothie and surprise your loved ones with breakfast in bed!

Ingredients:

1 cup organic hemp milk
1 cup organic frozen cherries
1 large organic bananas
2 T organic raw cacao nutritional powder
1 cup ice

Method:

Place ingredients into blender in the order above and blend until smooth.

Vegan Banana Split Smoothie

Waking up and having an ice cream banana split in the morning might be frowned upon by most.  So, if you're craving a banana split in the morning, have it in the form of a smoothie!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups organic hemp milk
1 organic banana
1/2 cup organic strawberries, frozen
1/2 cup organic pineapple

Green-Tea/Brown-Rice Smoothie

The brown rice was staring me in the face, leftover from last night's dinner. I just had to try some in a smoothie. I think the brown rice added a wonderful sweetness to this ultra-green drink.

Green-Tea/Brown-Rice Smoothie:

1 organic banana
2/3 cup frozen organic strawberries
4 ounces organic hemp milk
4 ounces filtered water
1/2 cup organic brown rice (cooked, it definitely must be cooked)
1/2 t organic matcha powder
1 cup organic kale (chopped)
1/3 cup organic spinach (fresh)

I feel that a Vitamix, or the like, is necessary for this one in order to blend in the rice. Add the ingredients in the above order; mix slowly from low speed to high. Mix for 30-40 seconds on high speed.

Cheers!

Vegan Mint Chocolate Mate Smoothie

I started my morning with this deliciously smooth and minty chocolate smoothie.

Both tea and smoothies provide us with many health benefits.  So, why not combine the two and get the best of both worlds?

My mint chocolate mate is from Mountain Rose Herbs.  The tea contains: organic mate, organic peppermint leaf, organic roasted cacao nibs, organic roasted carob, vanilla beans, and organic roasted cacao powder.

The ingredients are few for this smoothie because the tea it self provides all the flavor.

Ingredients:

1 cup cold brewed organic mint chocolate mate
1/4 cup organic hemp milk
1 small organic banana

Mix until smooth in a Vitamix or a high speed blender.
